A friendly India Pakistan Relation is Much Needed

Synopsis: The positive signs in the India-Pakistan relation are again turning negative. Pakistan recently took an U-turn after the announcement to open trade with India.

Background:

Recently, Pakistan reversed a two-year old decision to suspend all trades with India. Followingly, Pakistan allowed for the import of cotton and sugar from India.

However, the decision to allow the import of cotton and sugar from India has been withdrawn within a fortnight.

It has been stated that restoration of J&K’s special status will be the precondition for opening up trade with India.

Why Pakistan was ready to resume trade with India?

Because of the following reasons, the government of Pakistan was ready to resume trade with India,

First, the economy of Pakistan is very weak, and it has been sustained by IMF loans.

Second, the action by Financial Action Task Force over possible blacklisting on terror financing is affecting the ordinary citizens.

Third, the Pandemic has also impacted the financial health of the country.

Fourth, a steep fall in the cotton yield has kept the prices of the commodity high. This has caused a crisis in the country’s main manufacturing and export industry.

What is the way forward?

India needs the cooperation of Pakistan to maintain peace on the western front. Especially after the standoff with China at the LAC in eastern Ladakh.

To maintain friendly relation, India needs to be supportive of Pakistan by helping them to overcome the financial crisis by

Lifting the 200 percent tariffs on Pakistani imports imposed after the Pulwama attack.

Restoring the hugely popular cross-LoC trade and bus service. This will also help to strengthen the peace across the border.

Supernova explosion traced to one of the hottest kind of stars

• The rare Wolf–Rayet stars are highly luminous objects a thousand times that of the Sun and have intrigued astronomers for long.

• They are massive stars and strip their outer hydrogen envelope which is associated with the fusion of Helium and other elements in the massive core.

• Tracking of certain types of massive luminous supernovae explosion can help probe these stars that remain an enigma for scientists.

 More information:

• A team of astronomers from Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India with international collaborators have conducted the optical monitoring of one such stripped-envelope supernova called SN 2015dj hosted in the galaxy NGC 7371 which was spotted in 2015.

• They calculated the mass of the star that collapsed to form the supernovae as well as the geometry of its ejection.

• The scientists also found that the original star was a combination of two stars – one of them is a massive WR star and another is a star much less in mass than the Sun.

• Supernovae (SNe) are highly energetic explosions in the Universe releasing an enormous amount of energy.

• Long-term monitoring of these transients opens the door to understand the nature of the exploding star as well as the explosion properties. It can also help enumerate the number of massive stars.

🔆EARTH’S SEISMIC NOISE

▪️Why in News?

✅Scientists  at  the  British  Geological  Survey  (BGS) have reported a change in the Earth’s seismic noise and vibrations amid the coronavirus lockdown.

▪️About:

✅ They  have  observed  a  30-50  per  cent  fall  in levels of ambient seismic noise since schools and businesses were closed in mid-March.

✅ Seismologists  around  the  world  have  now  begun a collaborative effort to study the fall in seismic noise levels.

▪️What is seismic noise?

✅In geology, seismic noise refers to the relatively persistent  vibration  of  the  ground  due  to a multitude of causes.

✅It  is  the  unwanted  component  of  signals

recorded by  a  seismometer– the  scientific instrument that records ground motions, such as  those caused  by earthquakes,  volcanic eruptions, and explosions.

✅This  noise  includes  vibrations  caused due  to

human  activity,  such  as  transport  and manufacturing,  and  makes  it  difficult  for

scientists  to  study  seismic  data that  is  more valuable.

✅Apart from geology, seismic noise is also studied  in other fields such as oil exploration, hydrology, and earthquake engineering.

▪️How to reduce the noise levels help scientists?

✅The seismic noise vibration caused by human activity are of  high  frequency  (between 1-100 Hz),  and  travel  through  the  Earth’s  surface layers.

✅Usually, to measure seismic activity accurately and reduce the effect of seismic noise, geologists place their detectors  100  meters below  the Earth’s surface.

✅ Due  to  lower  noise  levels,  scientists  are  now  hoping that  they  would  be  able  to  detect smaller  earthquakes  and tremors that had  slipped past their instruments so far.

✅It will encourage villagers to acquaint them with aspects of safety and cleanliness, and with the  rules of the forest.

✅The intention is to put Tharu villages on the tourism map and to create jobs and bring economic  independence to the tribal population.

▪️Who are the Tharu people?

✅The community belongs to the Terai lowlands, amid the Shivaliks or lower Himalayas.

✅The Tharus live in both India and Nepal.

✅  In the Indian Terai, they live mostly in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar

✅Most of them are forest dwellers and some practice agriculture.

✅Members of the tribe survive on wheat, corn, and vegetables are grown close to their homes.

✅A majority still lives off the forest.

▪️Details on Tharu language, food, and culture:

✅They speak various dialects of Tharu, a language of the Indo-Aryan subgroup, and variants of  Hindi, Urdu, and Awadhi.

✅In central Nepal, they speak a variant of Bhojpuri, while in eastern Nepal, they speak a variant of Maithili.

✅Tharus worship Lord Shiva as Mahadev.

✅Most Tharutribals consume alcoholic beverages, and some eat beef.
